Rule 3: A Wingman Does Not Covet His Partner’s Girl
A wingman is not out to score.
A wingman is especially not out to score with the girl his partner’s trying to win over. A wingman’s goal is to support his partner when it comes to getting the girl, not to try to get her for himself. Fighting over a girl is a perfect way to ensure that neither of you will get her and leave you pissed off at each other in the bargain. Working with a wingman requires trust; he’s there to work on your behalf. A wingman who betrays that trust, intentionally or otherwise, will only ruin your evening and your partnership.
You need to work out with your wingman in advance who your target is, in order to minimize confusion and hurt feelings. The simplest way of doing this is the First Approach method: whomever makes the first move gets to pick which girl he wants, while the wingman comes in afterwards in order to help handle the others in the group.
Like every relationship, the relationship between a wingman and his partner is one of give-and-take; after the first approach, the wingman and his partner should switch roles. Nobody wants to be stuck in permanent wingman role, after all.
Rule 4: A Wingman Handles the Obstacles
The other purpose of a wingman is to prevent anything from stopping his partner from hooking up with his chosen target. He’s there to help sort out the logistics of the night, give his friend a boost when things start to falter and provide material support – drinks, rides, condoms, etc. Critically, he’s also there to run interference with potential cockblocks, whether they be male or female.
A male cockblock is typically – but not always – another man competing for the same woman’s attentions. Whether he’s attempting to out alpha male the wingman’s partner or just ruin his game out of jealousy, the male cockblock can kill an approach. The wingman’s best option here is to befriend and distract the competing men. Telling funny stories, talking about sports, getting them involved in the UFC match on the TV, or even playing secondary wing by introducing them to other women nearby will all help keep male cockblocks from ruining the interaction.
Female cockblocks, on the other hand can be more difficult. Sometimes it can be as simple a matter of just keeping them occupied; a bored or jealous female friend will tend to drag the others away. Sometimes this means having to talk to the most mind-numbingly dull woman in the bar for hours. Sometimes this means having to be willing to take one for the team and at least pretend to be attracted to the obstacle. Yes, it may mean having to make out with someone you can’t otherwise stand. Sacrifice is the name of the game when it comes to being a wingman…
Just don’t forget that your partner will owe you.
Big time.
