After having been sitting on this for a little while now, I’m pleased to make an announcement:
I’m writing a new book! The next book – (very) tentatively titled “Building A Better Life – A Guide To The Dating Life of Your Dreams” is due out in 2015 from Thought Catalog, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s going to be a step-by-step process of self-improvement from helping to level up your life from the inside out, while building the skills you need for the social and romantic success you’ve always wanted.
I’m also going to be writing some fresh material for Thought Catalog as well – not to mention providing some sneak previews from the book as we get closer to it’s release date.
What does this mean for the site? Well, there’re going to be some temporary changes to the structure and publishing schedule. As you might imagine, I’m going to be going balls to the wall with the new book, which means I need to do some shuffling around in order to actually, y’know, get everything done. And I’ll be honest with you: I’ve been resisting making these changes because… well, having built up my audience writing at such a prolific rate, I’m more than a little terrified of losing it by slowing down.
At the same time, however, trying to keep up a four (five, every other week) pace plus the book means that something’s gotta give if I want to keep producing writing of any quality. The last thing I want to do is half-ass any part of my work. Let’s face it, you guys deserve the full-ass treatment.
So as it stands, things are going to change around here slightly. The publishing schedule on the site is going to change to twice a week, with a focus on readers’ questions, plus the occasional guest piece from some amazing contributors, as I work on the book. There’ll be dating and lifestyle articles too – they’ll just be a little shorter and less frequent.
Meanwhile, you can also find my writing at my bi-weekly column at Kotaku and on Thought Catalog as well. Trust me: you aren’t going to be lacking for Dr. NerdLove material.
And if you don’t mind a tease… to help ease any possible disappointment, we may be seeing the return of a much-requested feature that hasn’t been around for the last couple years.
I’m pretty damn excited!
Now that being said, there is one announcement I’m sad to make:
I’m closing down the Dr. NerdLove forums. It’s not something I want to do, but unfortunately, circumstances have more or less forced my hand. The forums actually take up a significant portion of my server space and are continually growing. It’s a feature that requires constant attention and maintenance – I’m sure many of you have noticed the technical snafus that crop up on occasion – not to mention a crack team of moderators to help keep things useful. Sadly, the forum has grown to the point that I’m now over capacity on my server space and the server costs of hosting it have reached untenable levels.
Between the financial cost, the technical issues and my just plain not having time to manage it the way it deserves… well, all good things must come to an end. And so it’s time to say goodbye to the forums. I’m incredibly proud of the community that’s grown up around this blog and I believe that the moderators deserve a round of applause for having generously volunteered their time and effort in helping it grow. So I want to say: Trooper6, Bunny, Mel and Enail – thank you so much for your part in making the forums work. I couldn’t have done it without you guys and I appreciate everything you’ve done to make it a success.
I know people will miss the forums. I’m sorry to see it go too. The official shut-down date is this Friday, August 8th at 9 AM CST – so you have until then to finish up any threads, download important messages and to wrap up any affairs. I hope the community will find a new home – perhaps someone should start a sub-Reddit! (Imagine all the heads asplode…) – and I thank everyone for having been a part of it.
